Australian Centre for the Moving Image in Melbourne

The ACMI is located on Federation Square and highlights all aspects of cinematography through screenings, galleries, instillations, festivals, workshops, lectures and studio events. The center is spread over four levels in the Alfred Deakin Building and provides entertainment, education and conservation of precious historic artifacts and footage. The center's two cinema's have state-of-the-art equipment and high definition sound systems. There are also several galleries and studios. The main permanent exhibition "Screen Worlds: The story of Film, Television and Digital Culture" is free and traces the major events in Australian film making history and the culture of Australian cinema. The exhibition includes interactive displays and covers Emergence, Voices, Sensation, Games Lab and Kids Space. In addition there are temporary exhibitions (some free, some ticketed). In the center's cinemas you can see screenings of classic Australian films or themed film programs. Check their website for the regular behind-the-scenes talks and events which give insight into the Australian film industry. The same goes for creative workshops which can include getting the chance to create your own film or learning from guest film makers and producers.
